The word of the year for 2013-14 in Urbana City Schools is CHANGE.

As a district, we have implemented more significant improvements than at any time in the past five years. We have reconfigured our grade level structure in our school buildings, implemented a transportation fee for co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, and reorganized our student transportation program to improve our efficiency.

First, our school buildings now are configured as listed:
North Elementary – Kindergarten and First Grade
South Elementary – Second and Third Grades
East Elementary – Fourth and Fifth Grades
Urbana Junior High – Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Grades
Urbana High School – Grades Nine through Twelve.
Urbana Local – Pre-school students

Changing the grade level arrangement for our buildings allows us to have the students in each grade together throughout the district. This enables us to be more efficient with staffing and improves our ability to be more effective in meeting the needs of all students. This change was a large part of the cost-reduction plan to reduce district annual expenditures by one million dollars.

Another piece of the cost-containment plan was the implementation of a transportation fee for student activities. All student athletes must now pay an annual $100 fee. This is a one-time fee that allows the student to participate in athletics throughout the school year. Other student activities will be required to pay a fee of $5 to $47, depending on the transportation required.

The final big change, and another piece of the district’s cost-savings plan, is the restructuring of our student transportation services. Moving the start time for students in Kindergarten through fifth grade back by fifteen minutes, along with other routing change, allows us to be more efficient with our bussing system.

The Board of Education and all staff are continuing to work to make the best use of the available resources in serving our students and the community.

Thank you for your interest in our district. I invite you to take some time to learn more about our district by using the links provided on our web site. Please make use of the available district calendar and plan to join us for one or more of our many public activities.
