Building Excellence – Theme of the 2014-15 School Year

Last year there were many changes due to the reorganization of the grade levels in our school buildings. Now that the staff and students have settled in to their new locations, we have the opportunity this year to focus on improvements throughout the District. As the dust from the moves have settled this year we will be Building Excellence in our daily classroom instruction, student behavior program, and school facility safety during this school year.

The implementation of Ohio’s New Learning Standards is now complete and our staff is reviewing lessons, learning targets, and assessments to ensure that we provide the structure and rigor that our students need to be successful in the future.

Another district-wide initiative is the implementation of a Positive Behavior Support System (PBIS) to strengthen our ability to share behavioral expectations with students. Teams of district staff members began meeting last year to look at building systems for instructing students on appropriate behavior. The focus of this program is reducing problem student behaviors by supporting and recognizing the expected students behaviors. Staff throughout the buildings and district will eventually be using a set of common terminology when talking with students and parents about behavior.

Building safety is also improving for this year as each school now has a secure access station installed. With this system, school staff will now be able to screen all visitors and record their identification when they enter a school building – an important security measure to ensure the safety of our children. This “buzz in” system consists of an intercom, security camera, and door lock release.

On behalf of board, staff, and students, I’d like to thank the community for voting on November 4 th to approve a bond issue to raise our local share of funding for the District Facilities Master Plan that includes the following components:
